Alberta OWL Cooperation

In the Alberta OWL cooperation, universities in OWL (East Westphalia-Lippe, in German Ostwestfalen-Lippe, Germany) and postsecondary educational institutions in Edmonton (Canada) work together to exchange and develop knowledge. The focus of the cooperation is on close interdisciplinary collaboration in research, as well as the exchange of students and trainees. Multilateral relations between all partners involved are intended to supplement, combine and expand the strengths of both regions.

Edmonton – the city of learners

Edmonton, with its 1.3 million inhabitants, is located in the heart of Alberta in western Canada. With over 90,000 students annually, the city is an intellectual center. Prime ministers and Nobel laureates come from renowned educational institutions. Known as the “hotbed of knowledge and innovation,” Edmonton is home to many excellent research institutions, biotechnology, agriculture and oil companies. Among other things, the broadly developed information and telecommunications technology sector makes the city a location for national and international business enterprises. The region is also a popular tourist destination in the Rocky Mountains with its world-renowned Banff and Jasper National Parks.

OWL – science and industry united

Ostwestfalen-Lippe (East Westphalia-Lippe) in northwestern Germany is a region with around 120,000 companies and an industrial focus in which business and science are closely linked. The cooperation of a wide variety of high-performance companies and universities makes OWL an important science location with more than 65,000 students. Internationality plays a central role in this. Several so-called “hidden champions,” major world market leaders, have their headquarters in OWL. The two largest cities Bielefeld and Paderborn complement each other in many ways.
