Admission requirements

For work-integrated studies, applicants must provide proof of a practical placement with a cooperating company over the entire duration of studies. Please check offers from cooperating companies in the company portal.

Abitur, Fachhochschulreife or an equivalent school leaving certificate or educational background that qualifies you for higher education is required.

B2 level in English is required; the following language certificates are recognised:

  • IELTS: score of at least 5.5,
  • TOEFL (IBT): score of at least 72,
  • TOEFL (PBT): score of at least 543,
  • TOEFL (ITP): score of at least 543,
  • Telc B2 certificate,
  • UNIcert II,
  • Cambridge English Qualification: score of at least 160.

Applicants with a German university entrance qualification (Abitur) can provide proof of their English language skills through their certificate (Zeugnis). The minimum grade in English as a foreign language is “sufficient” (ausreichend).

English natives and applicants with a high-school degree or an equivalent university entrance qualification obtained in an English-speaking country can provide proof of their English language skills with a document provided by their school or university stating that the language of instruction was English.

Language certificates not listed above are subject to individual examination.

Prospective students can also send speculative applications to any company they would like to work with.

If you are interested in a company that is not cooperating with us yet, the speculative application is a promising option. For example, a good option is to apply to companies that are based near your hometown. In your application, you can refer to HSBI’s offer (https://www.hsbi.de/praxisintegriertes-studium/industrial-engineering-companies) and provide the links to the information on our websites. You are also welcome to share our contact details!

If the company is interested, they can contact us directly. Once contact has been established, we will inform the company in detail and check the company’s suitability for conducting the studies. Applying to HSBI

Applicants with a German university entrance qualification can find step-by-step instructions here.

The information below applies to applicants who have earned their (subject-specific) university entrance qualification abroad.

IMPORTANT NOTE:
Both the university entrance certificate and the valid cooperation agreement must be available at the time of application.

The information below applies to the work-integrated bachelor’s degree study Industrial Engineering.

Step 1: Application

As an applicant with certificates issued abroad, you must apply by e-mail (not via uni-assist and not via HSBI’s application portal). Please send your application documents by e-mail to admission@hsbi.de, attaching the following application documents:

  • Proof of university entrance qualification (originals and translations into German or English),
  • Recognised language certificate,
  • Copy of the cooperation agreement*,
  • Passport copy,
  • CV.

*Please note: The work placement can be planned as an internship, part-time job or as an apprenticeship. Proof of this must be provided before registration through an agreement on the implementation of the work-integrated study (cooperation agreement) between the students, the cooperation company and HSBI.

Step 2: Submission of the cooperation agreement by post

After you have applied by e-mail, we need three physical signed copies of the cooperation agreement with the cooperation company. Please submit these to HSBI by post or clarify with the company whether it sends us the documents.

Step 3: Review of documents and registration (enrolment)

In the next step, we will review the cooperation agreement and the suitability of your company. If everything is fine, you will receive a confirmation of receipt and a copy of the cooperation agreement signed by us by post. The company, too, will receive a signed copy of the cooperation agreement from us.

Around mid-June you will receive the following documents by e-mail:

  • Admissions letter,
  • Payment request,
  • Information on the digital proof of health insurance.

If necessary, you will be asked to provide further documents/proof. In order to ensure a smooth start to your studies, we kindly ask you, also in your own interest, to submit the requested documents in good time.

In the payment request, which you will receive by e-mail, you can find the semester contribution to be paid and your personal registration deadline. You must transfer the semester contribution and ask your health insurance provider to send the digital proof of your health insurance to HSBI by this deadline. We will not be able to fully register you until the contribution has been booked in HSBI’s system and we have received all the required documents (including the digital notification of your health insurance).

Step 4: Semester contribution and credentials

After we have fully registered you, you will receive a letter with the credentials for our online campus. It may take a few days for you to receive the letter. Students who were already registered at HSBI in the past or still are usually keep their student ID no. and thus their credentials for HSBI’s online services.

Programme objectives

The English-taught study programme Industrial Engineering addresses students of all nationalities offering an ideal opportunity to get to know “technology made in Germany.”

Interdisciplinary and business-related courses complement the technical aspects of the programme. Therefore, graduates are particularly suitable for interdisciplinary activities in a company, as they are able to evaluate, organise and optimise processes economically and technically.
Programme organisation

Students enrolled in the work-integrated study programme Industrial Engineering are at the same time employed by a company, which is the peculiarity of the work-integrated programme.

Each semester consists of an academic term and a work term.

The academic term comprises lectures, seminars and laboratory courses at the university.

The subsequent work term takes place in the respective company for which the student is working. During that period, theoretical knowledge obtained at the university can be applied to day-to-day business at the company. During the work-related projects (4th and 5th semesters) students examine specific subjects and elaborate and submit their findings in form of a scientific term paper. The work-related project during the 6th semester is not graded.

The relevant work experience integrated into the programme is beneficial for both the student and the company and can provide a solid foundation for a possible permanent position in the company after having achieved the bachelor’s degree.

Professional fields

Industrial engineers can put the skills and competencies they have acquired into practice in a wide range of areas. In addition to the aforementioned interdisciplinary approach balancing technology and business-related courses, topics such as sustainability and diversity also enhance the graduates’ profiles.

Based on their broad education, graduates will be able to assess company processes not only technically, but also economically, and thereby start and control optimisation processes. Career options after graduation are manifold. Industrial engineers work in purchasing, production planning, product management, quality and project management or technical sales. Later on, they often also fill positions in marketing, finance and controlling.

Work-integrated study programme

In the work-integrated study programme, students are employed by a company throughout the entire duration of the programme. Being part of the company from the very beginning equips students not only with academic training but also with professional practice. Theoretical knowledge is put into practice and vice versa. Students become familiar with their respective company’s culture and achieve a high degree of efficiency in their job.
